How We Rate Services

CryptoGrows ratings are built on a transparent, multi-dimensional framework. Each service is evaluated across a consistent set of criteria, weighted by importance to users. Every score is based on hands-on testing, not vendor submissions.

Rating Criteria & Weights

We assess cryptocurrency services using five primary dimensions. The weightings reflect what matters most to the average user:

  1. Security & Custody (30%) — Insurance coverage, audit history, custody model (centralized vs multi-sig), cold storage practices, incident response record, and compliance certifications.
  2. Fees & Pricing (20%) — Trading fees, withdrawal fees, deposit methods and their costs, maker/taker spread, minimum account balances, and hidden charges.
  3. User Experience (20%) — Onboarding flow, mobile app quality, chart tools, order types, customer support response time, and documentation quality.
  4. Assets & Pairs (15%) — Number of cryptocurrencies supported, fiat on/off-ramps, stablecoin options, trading pairs, futures availability, and roadmap.
  5. Compliance & Regulation (15%) — Licensing in major jurisdictions (US, EU, UK), regulatory track record, AML/KYC processes, and transparency in corporate structure.

Scores within each dimension are assigned 1 to 10. The final overall score is the weighted average. A service must score at least 2.0 overall to appear in our ratings.

Hands-On Testing Protocol

Every rated service goes through the same testing checklist:

  • Create a non-custodial account on the platform (KYC if required).
  • Deposit test funds via bank transfer, card, and stablecoin, if available. Measure settlement times and actual fees.
  • Place market and limit orders across at least three major pairs (BTC, ETH, USDC).
  • Test the mobile app: navigation, charting, order placement, notifications.
  • Withdraw test funds to an external wallet. Confirm withdrawal fee, processing time, and destination verification steps.
  • Contact support with a test question. Track response time and answer quality.
  • Review public documentation, including fees schedule, terms of service, security audit reports, and regulatory status.

Testing is repeated quarterly or immediately after a major platform change (fee adjustment, security incident, regulatory event, UI overhaul). We maintain detailed testing logs for audit purposes.

Data Sources

Our methodology blends official data, market aggregators, and independent research. No single source is authoritative; we verify across multiple channels.

  • CoinGecko API — Market cap, price, trading volume, historical highs/lows, circulating supply, developer activity, and community sentiment for all coins we cover.
  • CoinMarketCap — Backup for market cap and price data; used for cross-check correlation.
  • Official Blockchain Explorers — On-chain transaction volume, active addresses, token distribution, and network metrics (for blockchains we forecast).
  • Service Provider Documentation — Published fee schedules, white papers, governance docs, official roadmaps, and regulatory filings.
  • Regulatory & Court Records — SEC filings, CFTC enforcement, FinCEN guidance, court decisions, and official government announcements.
  • Third-Party Audits — Security audits from firms like Trail of Bits, Certora, OpenZeppelin, Halborn, and Least Authority.
  • Community & Industry Forums — Reddit, Crypto Twitter, Discord, governance forums, and GitHub repos for real-world user feedback and technical discussion.

We do not rely on paid advertising, affiliate commissions, or vendor marketing claims as primary sources. All sources are cited in article footnotes.

Editorial Independence

CryptoGrows does not accept payment in any form for favorable coverage. This is absolute.

  • No service provider, exchange, wallet, or blockchain project can pay for a higher rating or positive review.
  • We decline partnership offers that include editorial control or exclusivity clauses.
  • Sponsored content (like partner articles) is clearly labeled above the headline and separated from editorial coverage.
  • Our Editorial Team makes all rating decisions. Marketing, sales, and finance teams have no input on scores or recommendations.
  • If a service provider disputes a rating, we have a formal appeals process: they submit evidence, we re-test, we publish our response.

Revenue comes from display advertising, newsletter sponsorships, and affiliate commissions on third-party services (like portfolio trackers). None of this influences ratings or editorial priorities.

Conflict-of-Interest Policy

Team members must disclose any holdings, investments, or relationships that could bias their work.

  • Cryptocurrency holdings are disclosed. Analysts who hold a coin they cover must note it in bylines (e.g. "Full Disclosure: I hold BTC").
  • Employment or consulting relationships with service providers must be disclosed above articles.
  • Former employees of rated services can write reviews, but must disclose their prior role and leave office after a 1-year cooling-off period.
  • Board observers and advisors are listed publicly on our About page.
  • All bylines include author bios with relevant background and specialization.

We aim for a team diverse in opinion and background. We encourage dissenting views and publish rebuttal pieces when reasonable.

Update Cadence & Accuracy

Freshness matters. Here is how we keep ratings and data current:

  • Quarterly Re-Tests — Every service is re-tested and re-rated every 90 days. Major changes (fee restructures, security incidents) trigger immediate updates.
  • Daily Market Data — Price, market cap, and volume are pulled live from CoinGecko every 60 seconds.
  • Weekly Content Audits — We scan for broken links, outdated statistics, and deprecated products.
  • Corrections Policy — Errors are corrected within 24 hours; a correction notice is added to the article timestamp with a note explaining what changed.
  • Archived Versions — Readers can view historical versions of articles via our Internet Archive integration.

Every article and rating includes an "Last checked" or "Last updated" timestamp. Forecasts include a "as of [date]" note showing when the analysis was current.

How We Handle Disputes

A service provider or reader can dispute a rating or fact in our coverage. Here is the process:

  1. Send dispute details to [email protected] with evidence (links, docs, screenshots).
  2. We acknowledge within 48 hours and assign an independent reviewer (not the original author).
  3. If the dispute points to new information or a data error, we re-test or verify.
  4. We publish our response, either retracting part of the coverage, issuing a correction, or explaining why we stand by our original rating.
  5. If a service believes our response is still unfair, they can request a second opinion from our Editorial Board.

Disputes are not grounds for removal from our site unless we find evidence of fraud or widespread factual error on our part.

Our mission is to inform, not to please. Independence is the only asset that matters in financial journalism.
