USDC is the most-regulated, most-transparent major stablecoin. Issued by Circle (a US-based financial services company on a public-listing path), USDC maintains a 1:1 peg backed by short-term US Treasuries and cash reserves at insured banks. Monthly attestations by Deloitte make USDC the default choice for institutional and Western users.
What USDC actually is
USDC is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin. Every USDC in circulation is backed by an equivalent value of USD held in reserve. Circle mints new USDC when authorized parties (typically exchanges or institutional customers) deposit USD; Circle burns USDC when holders redeem for USD.
USDC is available natively on 20+ chains — Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, and more. Circle CCTP enables native burn/mint cross-chain transfers without wrapped tokens.
Reserves and transparency
- Backing: ~80% short-term US Treasuries (via BlackRock Circle Reserve Fund), ~20% cash at regulated banks
- Attestations: monthly reports by Deloitte, published on Circle's transparency page
- Regulation: US MSB + state money transmitter licenses; NYDFS-supervised
- Circulation: ~$45B in 2026
The SVB depeg (March 2023)
USDC briefly depegged to $0.87 during the Silicon Valley Bank collapse in March 2023, because Circle had $3.3B of USDC reserves held at SVB. Once the FDIC guaranteed all SVB deposits over the weekend, USDC restored peg by Monday morning.
The incident highlighted that even the most-regulated stablecoins have bank-exposure risk. Circle has since diversified its banking relationships significantly.
Who should use USDC
- Anyone wanting the most-transparent major stablecoin
- US-based users who need regulated stablecoin exposure
- DeFi users leveraging USDC in lending, LPs, and yield strategies
- Institutional treasuries managing on-chain stable positions
Verdict
USDC is the reference regulated stablecoin. Best-in-class transparency, real Treasury backing, and deep multi-chain support make it the default choice for anyone not specifically seeking decentralization (DAI/USDS) or highest liquidity (USDT).
