1. Deposit. A user sends USDC, ETH, DAI, wBTC, or another supported asset to a vault contract. They receive yvTokens proportional to their share of the vault.
2. Strategy execution. The vault routes capital to one or more strategies — lending on Aave, providing Curve LP positions, earning CRV and CVX rewards, compounding those rewards back to the base asset. Strategies are written and audited by the Yearn contributor team.
3. Harvest. Strategies periodically "harvest" accumulated rewards, swap them to the base asset, and deposit them back into the vault. Each harvest compounds the yield and increases the yvToken exchange rate.
4. Withdrawal. At any time, depositors redeem yvTokens for the underlying asset at the current exchange rate (which includes all accumulated yield). No lock-up applies to most vaults.

Yearn v3 (launched progressively from 2023) modularized the vault architecture, allowing external strategists to plug in strategies via a standardized interface. This opened the protocol to a larger contributor base and more diverse strategy types without centralizing development.

YFI tokenomics and governance

YFI launched with a fixed supply of 30,000 tokens, all distributed through liquidity mining over roughly 10 days in July 2020. A governance vote later increased the supply to approximately 36,638 YFI to fund a developer treasury. No further supply increases have been approved since.

• Supply scarcity. With fewer than 40,000 tokens ever, YFI has the smallest absolute supply of any major DeFi governance token. This creates volatility when significant holders move.
• veYFI. Yearn introduced veYFI (vote-escrowed YFI), where holders lock YFI for up to 4 years to receive veYFI, which governs vault emissions and earns protocol revenue. Longer lockups get higher multipliers, aligning long-term governance with economic incentives.
• dYFI rewards. veYFI holders receive dYFI (discounted YFI) as a reward, which can be redeemed for YFI from the treasury at a discount. This mechanism distributes treasury YFI to engaged governors.
• Revenue sharing. A portion of vault performance fees goes to veYFI stakers. This links YFI governance power to actual protocol cash flow.

Yearn and Andre Cronje

Andre Cronje is one of the most influential figures in DeFi history. He wrote the original Yearn contracts as a personal yield optimization tool and open-sourced the code with the YFI fair launch. He briefly departed from DeFi in 2021 and again in early 2022 before returning to an advisory and development role. His contributions to DeFi extend far beyond Yearn — he co-authored the Solidly DEX model on Fantom (precursor to the ve(3,3) design now widespread in DeFi), and his work has seeded multiple subsequent protocols.

Yearn today is governed by a distributed set of contributors and multisig signers, and its dependence on any single developer has diminished. However, Cronje's public endorsements and criticisms of crypto infrastructure remain market-moving events.

• Smart-contract risk. Yearn strategies are complex multi-protocol interactions. A bug in a strategy contract can drain a vault before governance can react. Yearn has experienced strategy losses in the past.
• Strategy risk. Each vault's yield depends on the protocols it interacts with (Curve, Convex, Aave, etc.). A depeg or exploit in an underlying protocol can reduce vault APY or cause a temporary loss.
• Low TVL in a low-yield environment. When DeFi yields are low, Yearn vaults attract less TVL, the protocol earns less fees, and the YFI value proposition weakens.
• Governance risk. veYFI governance is controlled by long-term lockers. Concentrated governance power can lead to decisions that favor large holders over small depositors.
• Competitor pressure. Pendle, Beefy, Convex, and protocol-native vaults all compete with Yearn. Purpose-built vault protocols for specific chains can out-yield Yearn in their niche.
• Custody. YFI on an exchange is subject to exchange solvency risk.
