Yearn Finance is the original DeFi yield aggregator, founded by Andre Cronje and launched in January 2020. It started as a simple tool that automatically moved stablecoin deposits between Compound, dYdX, Aave, and Fulcrum to chase the highest lending rate. Within months it evolved into a full vault architecture that could execute complex multi-step strategies across the DeFi ecosystem. The YFI token was distributed in July 2020 with zero pre-mine and zero founder allocation — a design that became a cultural landmark in the "fair launch" movement.
YFI is a pure governance token with no programmatic inflation and a famously tiny supply. Yearn Vaults sit on Ethereum mainnet and on Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Fantom, and other chains. The protocol has paid out over $100 million in cumulative yield to depositors. For a broader view of the DeFi lending landscape, see our Aave page.
YFI has one of the lowest circulating supplies of any major DeFi token — roughly 36,000 tokens — which means even moderate demand in USD terms translates to high per-token prices. YFI hit an all-time high above $90,000 in May 2021 and has traded across an extremely wide range since.

A Yearn Vault is a smart contract that accepts a single asset, deploys it across one or more DeFi strategies, and returns yield to depositors denominated in the same asset. Depositors receive a share token (yvUSDC, yvETH, etc.) that appreciates in value relative to the underlying as yield compounds.

Yearn v3 (launched progressively from 2023) modularized the vault architecture, allowing external strategists to plug in strategies via a standardized interface. This opened the protocol to a larger contributor base and more diverse strategy types without centralizing development.
YFI launched with a fixed supply of 30,000 tokens, all distributed through liquidity mining over roughly 10 days in July 2020. A governance vote later increased the supply to approximately 36,638 YFI to fund a developer treasury. No further supply increases have been approved since.
Andre Cronje is one of the most influential figures in DeFi history. He wrote the original Yearn contracts as a personal yield optimization tool and open-sourced the code with the YFI fair launch. He briefly departed from DeFi in 2021 and again in early 2022 before returning to an advisory and development role. His contributions to DeFi extend far beyond Yearn — he co-authored the Solidly DEX model on Fantom (precursor to the ve(3,3) design now widespread in DeFi), and his work has seeded multiple subsequent protocols.
Yearn today is governed by a distributed set of contributors and multisig signers, and its dependence on any single developer has diminished. However, Cronje's public endorsements and criticisms of crypto infrastructure remain market-moving events.
