Inflation Re-Accelerates in September
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that US consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year in September, up from 3.4% in August and above the 3.6% economists had forecast. Core inflation, which strips out food and energy, reached 2.6% against an expected 2.5%, with monthly core prices climbing 0.3% versus the 0.2% consensus. A sharp rise in gasoline prices was a key driver of the headline figure.
Bitcoin and Ether Feel the Pressure
Bitcoin was trading near $83,800 just before the 8:30 a.m. ET release and slid by more than $1,000 within minutes, touching roughly $82,800. Ether also lost ground and slipped below the $2,500 mark. The move reflects a simple chain of logic: firmer inflation raises the odds of further Federal Reserve tightening, which lifts Treasury yields and the dollar and weighs on risk assets. Futures pricing still showed about a 78% chance that the Fed holds rates at its October 27–28 meeting, but the report kept the possibility of another hike firmly on the table after September's increase.
Evernorth Takes an XRP Treasury Public
While traders digested the data, Evernorth Holdings continued its first week as a Nasdaq-listed company. Its shares began trading under the ticker XRPN on October 12 after the merger with Armada Acquisition Corp. II. At closing, the company reported holding approximately 473 million XRP and about $300 million in gross cash proceeds. XRPN closed its debut session at $16.91, far below the speculative highs seen in the SPAC shares before the merger completed.
Evernorth planned to ring the Nasdaq closing bell at 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday. It has also named Hugo Jeandesboz, a former co-CIO at Coinbase Asset Management, to run the treasury, with lending and liquidity strategies as the stated route to growing XRP per share. Its first institutional execution partners are Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase and BitGo.
What the Two Stories Have in Common
Investors should note that XRPN is an equity stake in a company that holds XRP, not a spot XRP exchange-traded fund. Its value depends on the treasury, the cash on its balance sheet and how well management deploys both. With XRP trading around $1.37, well below the price when the deal was first struck, the treasury has lost a substantial amount on paper. In an environment where inflation data can move the whole market within minutes, listed crypto vehicles like this one will be tested by macro conditions as much as by their own strategy.
What to Watch Next
The next checkpoint is the Producer Price Index on October 15, followed by the Fed's late-October meeting. A cooler reading could ease pressure on Bitcoin and Ether, while another hot print would strengthen the case for tighter policy. For XRPN, attention will turn to how quickly Evernorth puts its holdings to work and whether its shares trade closer to the value of its assets.
