Algorand (ALGO) is a layer-1 smart-contract platform built around a proof-of-stake design called Pure Proof of Stake. The mainnet launched in June 2019. It was founded by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor who won the Turing Award in 2012 for his work on cryptography and interactive proof systems. Block time is around 3.3 seconds and finality lands inside three seconds, with no forks at the consensus layer.
ALGO is the native token. It pays for transaction fees, secures consensus through participation, and is used to vote during quarterly governance periods. Initial maximum supply is 10 billion ALGO, with around 8.4 billion in circulation; the schedule completes full dilution by 2030. The Algorand Foundation manages ecosystem grants and governance, while Algorand Inc. ships the core protocol.
The Algorand price comes from supply and demand across spot and derivatives markets. The most active pairs are ALGO/USDT, ALGO/USD, and ALGO/BTC. Live data on this page is aggregated from a multi-venue market feed and refreshes every 60 seconds.

Pure Proof of Stake (PPoS) is the consensus protocol that runs Algorand. It selects a small committee of block proposers and voters at random for each round, weighted by ALGO balance. Selection uses a verifiable random function (VRF), so each node can prove it was chosen without revealing the selection process to attackers in advance.

Micali argued in the original Algorand papers that proof-of-work was wasteful and that traditional BFT protocols would not scale. PPoS was the alternative: random committees, cryptographic proofs of selection, and a deterministic finality property that means transactions cannot be reverted once a block is finalized.
Governance is the main reason ALGO holders lock tokens. Each quarter, the Algorand Foundation runs a governance period. Holders commit ALGO for the period, vote on the published measures, and receive rewards funded from the protocol’s reserves.
Earlier in Algorand’s life, every ALGO holder received automatic yield through a participation rewards program that ran from 2019 through 2022. That program ended after a governance vote, replaced by the active governance model. Yields have varied by period, generally between 5% and 10% APR depending on commitment size and treasury policy.
Algorand has spent more time on regulated and institutional partnerships than most layer-1 chains. The marquee deal was FIFA, which made Algorand the official blockchain platform for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Other partnerships have followed across government and finance.
The gap that comes up in every honest review of Algorand is between partnership announcements and recurring on-chain revenue. Several deals brought headlines but small daily transaction volumes. The chain that wins the institutional layer is the one that converts pilots into recurring fee flow, and that is still in progress.
The Algorand Virtual Machine (AVM) executes smart contracts on the chain. Contracts compile to TEAL, a low-level stack language, but most developers write in higher-level languages and let the toolchain handle the compilation.
The AVM is not EVM-compatible. That has been a friction point for teams porting from Ethereum or Solana, but AlgoKit has narrowed the onboarding gap. Real-world asset issuance, payments, and stablecoins have produced more shipping projects on Algorand than DeFi yield farming.
Buying ALGO follows the same five-step flow that works for any major coin.
Staking on Algorand is not a separate locked product the way it is on Ethereum or Solana. ALGO held in a non-custodial wallet already participates in the network; governance commitment is the action that earns yield.
The biggest unknowns for ALGO are not price swings but structural questions about where the chain fits in a crowded layer-1 market.

At the time of writing, Algorand (ALGO) trades at $0.113986, with a 24-hour trading volume of $28.88M and a total market capitalization of $1.02B. The asset is currently ranked #70 among all tracked cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Over the last 24 hours, the ALGO price has rose +2.18%. On the seven-day chart, Algorand has climbed +3.19%, showing consistent upward momentum across both timeframes. Short-term price swings are often amplified by liquidity conditions, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so traders should confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Algorand's all-time high of $3.56 was set on June 20, 2019. The current market price is +96.80% below that historical peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long-term recoveries and identifying macro support or resistance levels.
Buying Algorand (ALGO) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in Algorand converter above to estimate exactly how much ALGO you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether Algorand is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, ALGO carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
