Hedera (HBAR) is an enterprise-grade public network that runs on the Hashgraph consensus algorithm rather than a traditional blockchain. The mainnet went live on September 16, 2019. Mance Harmon and Dr. Leemon Baird co-founded the project; Baird is the cryptographer who invented the Hashgraph algorithm and patented it in 2016. HBAR is the native token. The maximum supply is hard-capped at 50 billion, and treasury releases follow a fixed schedule managed by the council.
Hedera is unusual because the governance layer is permissioned while network usage is open to anyone. A council of 39 enterprises operates the consensus nodes today. Anyone can submit transactions, build dApps, and run mirror nodes. This split is the part of the design that gets argued about the most: it gives enterprises a known set of operators to vet, and it gives critics a reason to say Hedera is not as decentralized as Ethereum or Solana.
The Hedera price comes from supply and demand across spot exchanges. The most active pairs are HBAR/USDT, HBAR/USD, and HBAR/BTC. Live data on this page pulls from a multi-venue market feed and refreshes every 60 seconds. The reference quote is volume-weighted across the venues with the deepest order books.
What tends to move HBAR on any given day:
The numbers in the price card above are live. The analysis below uses the levels at page load.
Most public networks use a chain of blocks. Hashgraph does not. It uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) where every node gossips every transaction it has heard, along with a record of who told it about that transaction. This is called gossip-about-gossip. Once enough history is shared, each node can calculate the order of events without anyone broadcasting a vote. This is virtual voting.

The practical differences:
Compared to Ethereum, Hedera trades programmable flexibility for predictable speed and tiny fixed fees (most transactions cost a fraction of a cent). Ethereum has a vastly larger smart contract ecosystem; Hedera is faster and cheaper on payments and message ordering.
The Hedera Governing Council is the part of Hedera that has no real equivalent in other major networks. It is a fixed group of 39 enterprises and universities. Each council member runs one consensus node, votes on protocol changes, and approves treasury releases. Members serve up to two three-year terms, after which the seat rotates.
A short look at the membership tells you what kind of network this is:
Holding HBAR does not give you a vote on protocol upgrades. It gives you the right to use the network, pay fees, and (separately) stake to a node to earn rewards. Governance happens at the council. This is the design choice you have to be comfortable with before allocating to HBAR.
Hedera ships three main services as native primitives, which means developers can use them without deploying a contract.
Real deployments include Avery Dennison atma.io for product identity across more than 30 billion physical items, dropp for sub-cent micropayments, Standard Bank for cross-border settlement experiments, and the Stablecoin Studio framework for regulated stablecoin issuance. The HBAR Foundation funds DeFi, gaming, and RWA projects through ecosystem grants.
In August 2024, Hedera released the Hashgraph algorithm and the core node software under the Apache 2.0 license. The project was contributed to the Linux Foundation and renamed Hiero. This was a meaningful shift: until then, Hashgraph was patented and licensed exclusively to Hedera.
What this changes in practice:
HBAR is listed on most major centralized exchanges and on a smaller number of DEXs. The path you choose depends on how much you want to hold and how comfortable you are with self-custody.
For multi-year price scenarios and on-chain trends, see our HBAR price forecast.
The risk profile of HBAR is different from a typical layer-1 token. The questions worth asking are mostly about governance and ecosystem maturity rather than chain security or developer activity.

At the time of writing, Hedera (HBAR) trades at $0.089748, with a 24-hour trading volume of $67.1M and a total market capitalization of $3.89B. The asset is currently ranked #29 among all tracked cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Over the last 24 hours, the HBAR price has rose +2.09%. On the seven-day chart, Hedera has retraced +1.68%, showing mixed signals across the short and medium term. Short-term price swings are often amplified by liquidity conditions, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so traders should confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Hedera's all-time high of $0.569229 was set on September 15, 2021. The current market price is +84.25% below that historical peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long-term recoveries and identifying macro support or resistance levels.
Buying Hedera (HBAR) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in Hedera converter above to estimate exactly how much HBAR you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether Hedera is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, HBAR carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
