Helium (HNT) is a decentralized wireless network that pays people to deploy radio infrastructure. The project was started in 2013 by Amir Haleem, Shawn Fanning (yes, the Napster co-founder), and Sean Carey. The actual Helium Network launched in 2019 on its own custom Layer 1 blockchain. The premise has stayed the same since: anyone can buy a hotspot, plug it in, and earn tokens for providing wireless coverage in their neighbourhood.
Helium is one of the original DePIN projects, short for decentralized physical infrastructure network. There are two coverage layers in production. LoRaWAN hotspots provide low-power IoT coverage for sensors, asset trackers, and similar low-bandwidth devices. 5G CBRS small cells provide cellular coverage that backstops a real consumer phone plan. Hotspot operators earn HNT or one of the sub-tokens (IOT, MOBILE) depending on which network they support, and HNT is the underlying value asset that ties the whole thing together.
HNT trades on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Bitfinex, Bybit, and OKX. The deepest pairs are HNT/USDT, HNT/USD, and HNT/USDC. Live data on this page comes from a multi-venue feed and refreshes every 60 seconds. The reference quote is volume-weighted across the most liquid order books, all on the Solana SPL version of HNT after the 2023 migration. The all-time high sits at roughly $54, set in November 2021 during the original DePIN narrative cycle.

The simplest way to understand Helium is to follow a packet. A LoRaWAN sensor (a soil moisture probe on a farm, a parking meter, a pet tracker) sends a small data packet. A nearby Helium hotspot picks it up and forwards it to the device owner, who pays for the transfer. Behind the scenes the payment uses Data Credits, which are non-transferable, burn-only credits priced at $0.00001 each. To get DC, someone burns HNT at the current HNT/USD rate. The burned HNT leaves circulation forever.
The structure looks elegant on paper. In practice the burn rate has rarely come close to matching emissions, which is why HNT inflation has been the loudest critique of the project for years. The Helium Mobile launch is the first piece of the design that produces meaningful, recurring DC burn from a paying consumer base.
Helium ran on a single token (HNT) until HIP-51 passed in 2022. That proposal split the rewards into sub-DAOs: one for the IoT/LoRaWAN side, one for the mobile/5G side. The result is the multi-token model that exists today, with HNT sitting on top as the underlying value asset.
The trade-off of this model is complexity. A retail buyer who just wants HNT exposure does not need to think about IOT or MOBILE, since both flow back into HNT through conversion. Operators and serious participants do need to track all four units, plus the conversion ratios that the sub-DAOs adjust by vote.
Helium Mobile is the most consumer-visible part of the project. Nova Labs (the company that grew out of the original Helium founders) launched the service in the US in January 2023. The headline product is a $20/month unlimited 5G plan that runs on the Helium 5G CBRS network when there is local coverage and falls back to T-Mobile roaming when there is not. Subscribers also earn MOBILE tokens for sharing location data and contributing to coverage maps.
Why the $20 price point matters for the network:
The honest assessment is that Helium Mobile is the make-or-break product for the entire token thesis. If subscriber growth keeps compounding and churn stays low, HNT has a clear fundamental story. If growth stalls and people churn back to T-Mobile or AT&T directly, the rest of the design has trouble carrying the network on its own.
Helium ran on its own custom Layer 1 from launch in 2019 until April 2023. HIP-70, approved by community vote in late 2022, moved the entire network to Solana. HNT, IOT, and MOBILE all became SPL tokens. The migration completed without major issues in April 2023, which was unusual for a chain swap of that scale.
After the migration, exchange listings broadened quickly. Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, Bitfinex, Bybit, and OKX all picked up HNT on Solana. The trade-off is the one every Solana-native project carries: HNT now inherits Solana network risk, including outages and any future regulatory pressure on SOL.
Buying HNT looks like buying any other Solana SPL token after the migration. Most buyers go through five steps. The one wrinkle is custody, since the Helium Wallet App is built specifically for HNT/IOT/MOBILE and remains the easiest way to manage all three sub-tokens together.
If you also plan to operate a hotspot, the Helium Wallet App is the right home for the rewards side anyway, since IOT and MOBILE land there and the in-app conversion to HNT is the simplest path.
The structural risks for HNT look different from a layer-1 token or a pure DePIN play. Helium Mobile subscriber retention sits at the top of the list, with hotspot churn, MOBILE/IOT inflation, and T-Mobile roaming dependence right behind it. Anyone modelling HNT long-term has to sit with these four together rather than pick one.

At the time of writing, Helium (HNT) trades at $0.765272, with a 24-hour trading volume of $232.7M and a total market capitalization of $142.42M. The asset is currently ranked #206 among all tracked cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Over the last 24 hours, the HNT price has rose +79.03%. On the seven-day chart, Helium has climbed +305.67%, showing consistent upward momentum across both timeframes. Short-term price swings are often amplified by liquidity conditions, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so traders should confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Helium's all-time high of $54.88 was set on November 12, 2021. The current market price is +98.61% below that historical peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long-term recoveries and identifying macro support or resistance levels.
Buying Helium (HNT) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in Helium converter above to estimate exactly how much HNT you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether Helium is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, HNT carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
