Raydium is the largest automated market maker on Solana and one of the main liquidity hubs of the Solana DeFi stack. It launched in February 2021, built by an anonymous team known as AlphaRay and XRay, and was the first AMM to integrate directly with a central limit order book on Solana. For broader chain context, see our Solana page.
RAY is the native token. It is used for staking, governance over protocol parameters, and a share of the swap fees collected by the AMM. Raydium spent its first two years competing with Serum, Orca, and a long tail of smaller Solana DEXs; the FTX collapse in late 2022 nearly killed Solana DeFi and Raydium with it, but the protocol survived and has since become the default venue where most Solana memecoins, including BONK, WIF, and fartcoin, get their first real liquidity.
RAY trades on every major Solana-aware spot venue. The deepest pairs are RAY/USDT, RAY/USDC, and RAY/SOL. Live data on this page comes from a multi-venue feed and refreshes every 60 seconds. The reference quote is volume-weighted across the most liquid order books. RAY hit an all-time high near $16.83 in September 2021, during the first wave of Solana DeFi mania, then drew down more than 95% during the FTX collapse before recovering with the broader Solana cycle.

Raydium is best understood as a hybrid AMM. Plain AMMs hold all their liquidity inside the protocol. Raydium pioneered routing AMM liquidity into a central limit order book on the same chain, which means a single Raydium pool serves both retail swappers and book-style traders without splitting depth. The original integration was with Serum; after FTX collapsed and Serum was abandoned, Raydium migrated to the community fork OpenBook in early 2023.

Compared with Jupiter, which is an aggregator that routes across every Solana DEX, Raydium is a venue. Jupiter often sends a meaningful share of its order flow into Raydium pools, which means the two are complements more than competitors. Compared with Orca, Raydium charges similar fees but has the OpenBook integration and the memecoin-launch reputation that Orca does not.
RAY launched with a 555,000,000 maximum supply, a number small enough that the float has stayed manageable through every Solana cycle. The original schedule allocated tokens to mining incentives, the team, partnerships, liquidity, advisors, and the community reserve, with multi-year vesting on the team and advisor portions. Most major unlocks finished by 2024.
The combination matters. A capped supply, finished team unlocks, and a recurring buyback funded by swap fees mean RAY economics now depend mostly on Solana trading activity rather than on emission schedules. That is not the same thing as price going up, but it does change the floor of the asset compared with the 2021 version of the token.
Raydium became the home of Solana memecoins almost by accident. Permissionless pool creation, deep AMM liquidity, OpenBook routing, and a community willing to chase low-cap launches combined to make Raydium the first place new tokens get a real market. By 2024, an outright majority of Solana memecoin volume, including BONK, WIF, POPCAT, and fartcoin, was clearing on Raydium pools at some point in their life cycle.
The honest read is that memecoin flow has been the single biggest driver of RAY revenue over the last two years, and any cooling of that cycle hits Raydium harder than it hits a pure stablecoin DEX. The other side of the trade is that no other Solana DEX has captured this lane to the same degree.
The Solana DEX landscape changed faster than the BNB or Ethereum equivalents. The names that mattered in 2021 (Serum, Atrix, Aldrin) are mostly gone. The names that matter in 2025 are Jupiter, Raydium, Orca, Meteora, and Lifinity, with Pump.fun feeding into all of them.
Raydium is not the cleanest product on Solana, and it is not the cheapest. What it has is the longest live track record of any surviving Solana AMM, OpenBook integration that no competitor matches, and a memecoin-launch reputation that has compounded for two years. That moat is real, but it is also concentrated.
RAY is widely listed, so the choice is mostly about how you want to hold it and whether you plan to stake. A typical buy-and-stake flow looks like this:
If you plan to stake or vote on governance, the position has to be in a wallet you control. RAY sitting on a centralized exchange does not earn the staking fee share and does not vote on your behalf.
RAY has more chain-specific risk than most large-cap DEX tokens, and most coverage of it skips that part. The risks worth taking seriously are concentrated in five places.
