Worldcoin is a project that pairs a cryptocurrency (WLD) with a global identity layer called World ID. It launched on July 24, 2023. The founders are Sam Altman (the OpenAI CEO), Alex Blania, and Max Novendstern, and the developer behind the protocol is a company called Tools for Humanity. The pitch is unusual even by crypto standards: scan your iris with custom hardware, prove you are a unique human exactly once, and receive WLD on a recurring schedule for as long as you remain verified.
The hardware is a chrome sphere about the size of a bowling ball called the Orb. The verification it produces is what Worldcoin calls proof of personhood. The token, WLD, has a 10 billion hard cap and circulates across Optimism, Ethereum, and Worldchain — the OP-Stack L2 that the Tools for Humanity team launched in October 2024. In late 2024 the umbrella brand was renamed to "World," with WLD kept as the token ticker.
The WLD price comes from spot and derivatives venues across global exchanges. Live data on this page is aggregated and refreshes every 60 seconds. The reference quote is a volume-weighted average of the venues with the deepest order books. Worldcoin reached an all-time high near $11.74 in March 2024 and has traded with sharp swings since.

World ID is meant to answer one question online: is the entity at the other end a unique human, or a bot, or someone running ten accounts? The verification flow is built around the Orb because iris patterns are biologically unique and stable across a lifetime, and they are hard to spoof at scale.

The flow looks like this:
As of mid-2024, around 10 million people had completed orb verification globally. The rollout has continued through 2025, though several jurisdictions have paused or restricted operations while data-protection authorities review the model.
Worldchain is the Layer 2 that Tools for Humanity launched in October 2024. It is built on the OP Stack, the same codebase that powers Optimism and Base, and it settles to Ethereum. The differentiator is at the policy layer: Worldchain reserves prioritized blockspace and lower fees for accounts that have a valid World ID attached, with separate lanes for unverified traffic.
The reasoning is straightforward. Most general-purpose chains have to spend block capacity defending against sybil traffic and bot armies. If the chain can verify each account belongs to a unique human, it can hand out airdrops, cap gas costs, gate apps, and run quadratic-funding experiments without the usual gaming. Whether that thesis holds up depends on how many real humans actually verify, and how many apps decide they need that guarantee.
WLD has a maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 tokens. The initial circulating supply at the July 2023 launch was around 143 million, almost all of it allocated to non-US holders and exchange market-makers. The rest is on a multi-year unlock schedule that runs into the 2030s.
The allocation breaks down as:
The grant mechanism is the unusual part. New human verifications keep adding to circulating supply on a per-person basis, separate from the cliff-based unlocks for insiders. Holders should track both the quarterly investor unlocks and the running pace of new verifications, because the two streams stack rather than offset each other.
World App is the official wallet and identity client built by Tools for Humanity. It holds a user’s World ID, custodies WLD and USDC balances, and exposes a mini-app marketplace where third-party developers can build human-gated experiences. Mini-apps cover the usual categories: payments, savings, swaps, on-ramp and off-ramp flows, and lightweight social and gaming products.
USDC integration was added in 2024, partly to give Orb-verified humans a stable-value asset they could spend without WLD volatility. World App also handles peer-to-peer payments, so the verification layer doubles as a contact graph: you can send money to someone’s World ID rather than copying a wallet address. For most users, the app is the only Worldcoin surface they will ever touch directly.
Buying WLD as a non-US user is straightforward — most major centralized exchanges list it. The catch worth knowing up front: WLD is not distributed inside the United States, and most major US-licensed exchanges do not list it for US residents. Coinbase added WLD outside the US in 2024.
Worldcoin carries a heavier regulatory tail than most large-cap altcoins, and the supply schedule keeps a steady headwind on price. A few risks specific to this asset matter more than generic crypto volatility.

At the time of writing, Worldcoin (WLD) trades at $0.300739, with a 24-hour trading volume of $215.47M and a total market capitalization of $1.03B. The asset is currently ranked #69 among all tracked cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Over the last 24 hours, the WLD price has rose +11.60%. On the seven-day chart, Worldcoin has climbed +25.28%, showing consistent upward momentum across both timeframes. Short-term price swings are often amplified by liquidity conditions, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so traders should confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Worldcoin's all-time high of $11.74 was set on March 10, 2024. The current market price is +97.45% below that historical peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long-term recoveries and identifying macro support or resistance levels.
Buying Worldcoin (WLD) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in Worldcoin converter above to estimate exactly how much WLD you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether Worldcoin is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, WLD carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
