The BNB burn mechanism

The latest auto-burn formula ties quarterly burns to BNB Chain block production and on-chain price. The supply target is 100 million BNB, down from 200 million at launch. Two burn mechanisms run in parallel.

1. Auto-Burn. Every quarter, Binance calculates a burn amount based on BNB price and the number of blocks produced on BSC. The burn is publicly verifiable on-chain.
2. Real-Time Burn (BEP-95). A portion of every BSC transaction gas fee is burned permanently, similar to Ethereum’s EIP-1559.
3. Pioneer Burn Program. Binance burns BNB lost in user errors as a community gesture, treating those tokens as effectively destroyed.

Cumulative BNB burned has passed 55 million tokens since launch. The pace continues until the 100 million target is reached.

How to buy and stake BNB

Buying BNB follows the same five-step flow.

BNB vs Ethereum vs Solana

BNB Chain competes with Ethereum and Solana for smart-contract activity. Each chain has trade-offs.

• Decentralization: Ethereum has the most validators of any smart-contract chain. Solana has fewer but larger validators. BNB Chain runs on a smaller validator set (currently around 40 active validators), with more concentrated governance.
• Throughput: BNB Smart Chain handles around 100 TPS at L1, with opBNB pushing several thousand. Ethereum L1 handles 15 TPS. Solana handles 3,000+ TPS at L1.
• Fees: BNB Chain transactions cost under $0.10 typically. Ethereum L1 ranges $1 to $50+. Solana fees average $0.001.
• Yield: BNB staking returns 3 to 5% APR. Ethereum staking returns 3 to 4%. Solana staking returns 6 to 8%.
• Use case: BNB is exchange-tied utility plus a smart-contract chain. Ethereum is the broad smart-contract platform. Solana is the high-throughput chain.

BNB is most often held as direct exposure to the Binance ecosystem and a high-throughput smart-contract chain, distinct from pure decentralization plays.

Risks of holding BNB

Volatility is the headline risk. The structural risks behind BNB matter just as much.

• Regulatory risk. The SEC, CFTC, and DOJ have all taken action against Binance. Founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down and served prison time as part of a 2023 settlement. Future enforcement could affect BNB.
• Centralization. Binance and related entities hold a meaningful share of BNB supply. The validator set on BNB Chain is small compared with Ethereum.
