GAS is the utility and fee token of the NEO blockchain, one of the earliest smart contract platforms outside Ethereum, originally launched in 2014 as AntShares before rebranding to NEO in 2017. NEO uses a dual-token model: NEO is the governance and voting token (indivisible, 100 million cap), while GAS is the divisible utility token used to pay for transaction fees, smart contract execution, and network storage on NEO N3.
GAS is generated continuously as a block reward distributed to NEO holders and the NEO Committee. NEO holders receive GAS passively by holding NEO on a compatible wallet — this is often described as NEO's staking model, though it is technically a block-generation reward rather than proof-of-stake. GAS has its own maximum supply, and its generation rate is defined in the NEO N3 protocol.
GAS trades on Binance, OKX, Gate, and several other exchanges. Live price on this page aggregates across GAS/USDT order books and refreshes every 60 seconds.

NEO's dual-token design separates governance rights from utility. NEO (100 million cap, indivisible) represents ownership and voting power in the network. GAS (divisible, generated through block rewards) is the fuel for everything that runs on the chain. This separation is intentional: NEO voters set the rules, while GAS absorbs the economic activity of using the network.

NEO N3 launched in 2021 as a major protocol overhaul that replaced the original NEO Legacy chain. N3 introduced native contracts (NativeContracts), a new NeoVM version, storage rent paid in GAS, improved interoperability through the Poly Network bridge, and a revamped NEO Committee governance system. GAS economics changed significantly in N3: storage rent is an ongoing GAS cost for keeping data on-chain, which introduced a continuous burn mechanism absent in Legacy.
NEO N3 targets enterprise and government blockchain use cases. Its primary competition is from Ethereum L2s, Hyperledger Fabric, and specialized enterprise chains. For context on other Layer 1 utility tokens, see Avalanche (AVAX) and our exchange ratings.
Holding NEO in a compatible wallet automatically generates GAS as a block reward. The rate depends on the number of NEO held and the current block generation schedule. This is the simplest passive income mechanism in the NEO ecosystem and requires no active staking, delegation, or lock-up beyond holding NEO in a non-custodial wallet.
GAS is available on major exchanges and is easy to purchase with USDT or via crypto swap.

GAS carries the standard risks of a Layer 1 utility token on a chain that has seen its market share shrink relative to Ethereum, Solana, and newer L1s.
This page provides information only, not financial advice. Utility tokens on mature but lower-activity Layer 1 chains carry adoption risk and liquidity risk.
At the time of writing, Gas (GAS) trades at $1.56, with a 24-hour trading volume of $2.28M and a total market capitalization of $101.8M. The asset is currently ranked #287 among all tracked cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Over the last 24 hours, the GAS price has rose +1.28%. On the seven-day chart, Gas has retraced +0.86%, showing mixed signals across the short and medium term. Short-term price swings are often amplified by liquidity conditions, news flow, and derivatives positioning, so traders should confirm signals across multiple indicators before acting.
Gas's all-time high of $91.94 was set on January 15, 2018. The current market price is +98.30% below that historical peak. Distance from the all-time high is a common reference point when evaluating long-term recoveries and identifying macro support or resistance levels.

Whether Gas is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, GAS carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
