Kusama is the canary network for Polkadot — a live, production blockchain that serves as an early-stage deployment environment for code and governance changes before they are applied to Polkadot. It was founded by Gavin Wood, co-founder of Ethereum and creator of the Polkadot protocol. Kusama launched in 2019 with the same codebase as Polkadot but with faster governance parameters, lower economic barriers to entry, and an explicitly experimental mandate: "expect chaos."
The native token is KSM. It pays transaction fees, participates in on-chain governance (Kusama has one of the most active on-chain governance systems in the space), and bonds to parachains — the parallel blockchain slots that connect to the Kusama relay chain. KSM has no hard supply cap; it inflates at approximately 10% annually to fund validator and nominator staking rewards. As of 2025, total supply is approximately 13-14 million KSM.
KSM trades on major centralized and decentralized exchanges. The live price on this page is a volume-weighted average updated every 60 seconds. KSM has historically traded at a significant discount to DOT (Polkadot's token) while retaining its own market dynamic as a higher-volatility play on Polkadot's technology.
Factors that drive KSM price:
Live price data streams into the chart above; editorial analysis below reflects a point-in-time perspective.
Kusama and Polkadot share the same codebase, the same relay-chain-and-parachain architecture, and the same governance model. The difference is parameterization and mandate. Kusama moves faster: governance periods that take 28 days on Polkadot take 8 days on Kusama. Parachain slot bonds are cheaper in dollar terms. The community is explicitly tolerant of breaking changes and experimental behaviour.

The relay chain / parachain architecture is Polkadot's and Kusama's core technical contribution to the ecosystem. The relay chain provides shared security and cross-chain messaging. Parachains are independent blockchains that lease a slot on the relay chain, gaining security without running their own full validator set.
How parachain slots work on Kusama:
Notable Kusama parachains include Karura (Acala's DeFi parachain on Kusama), Moonriver (Moonbeam's EVM parachain), Shiden (Astar's Kusama counterpart), and Khala (Phala's privacy computing parachain). Each Polkadot parachain has a Kusama sister chain that deploys first.
Kusama was among the first chains to deploy Polkadot's OpenGov system — a multi-track governance model where different types of proposals (treasury spend, runtime upgrades, parameter changes) run on separate tracks with different approval thresholds and timeouts. OpenGov replaced the original Council and Technical Committee structure in 2023.
KSM uses Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS). Holders can become validators or nominate up to 16 validators, earning a share of staking rewards. Kusama's validator set is smaller than Polkadot's but uses the same election algorithm (PHRAGMEN) to optimize stake distribution.
KSM is available on major exchanges and self-custody via Polkadot.js or Talisman wallet for staking.

Kusama is intentionally experimental, which makes it one of the higher-risk positions among established L1 tokens.

Whether Kusama is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, KSM carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
