What is Sui?
Sui is a Layer 1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs and launched on mainnet on May 3, 2023. The Mysten Labs founding team — Evan Cheng, Sam Blackshear, Adeniyi Abiodun, George Danezis, and Kostas Chalkias — came directly from Meta’s Novi/Diem project. Sui was designed around an object-centric data model and parallel transaction execution, with the goal of high throughput and sub-second finality.
The native asset is SUI. It is used to pay gas, secure the network through delegated staking, and vote on protocol governance. The maximum supply is 10 billion SUI, with a multi-year vesting schedule for early backers, the Mysten Labs treasury, and the community reserve.

Sui’s object-centric model: how it differs from Ethereum and Solana
Most blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana, use an account-based model. Balances live in accounts, and contracts read or write to those accounts. Sui takes a different path. Every asset on Sui is a first-class on-chain object with its own ID, owner, and metadata. Smart contracts operate on objects directly.
The practical effect is parallel execution. If two transactions touch unrelated objects, Sui processes them in parallel. Only transactions that touch shared objects (an AMM pool, an oracle feed) need to pass through consensus. The model fits naturally with the Move programming language’s linear-typing rules, which prevent assets from being duplicated or accidentally deleted.
Mysticeti consensus and parallel execution
Sui originally launched with the Bullshark/Narwhal consensus stack. In mid-2024 it migrated to Mysticeti, a new DAG-based BFT protocol. The change cut consensus latency to roughly 250-400 milliseconds and lifted effective throughput well past 10,000 transactions per second under measured benchmarks.
Three properties that come from the design:
- Sub-second finality on standard transactions, including those that pass through consensus.
- High peak throughput because owned-object transfers skip consensus entirely (the fast path).
- Predictable fees. Sui includes a storage fund: a slice of every transaction’s gas funds long-term storage incentives, so validators have an economic reason to retain state.
The Sui ecosystem: DeepBook, Cetus, Suilend
Sui DeFi has grown around three core primitives. DeepBook is a native central-limit order book that any application can use as shared liquidity. Cetus is the dominant concentrated-liquidity AMM. Suilend, Scallop, and Navi cover lending. Aftermath sits between DEX aggregation and yield infrastructure.
The chain has also been a memecoin venue. HIPPO, BLUE, and SCA drove sustained on-chain volume in 2024, and several launchpad protocols (TurbosFinance, MovEx) compete for new listings. zkLogin lets users sign in with Google or Twitch credentials, removing the seed-phrase onboarding step that blocks most retail users.

Aptos kept an account-centric model and a sequential execution model with parallelism added on top (Block-STM). Sui rebuilt around objects and parallel-by-default execution.
