Horizen is a privacy-focused blockchain platform that combines zero-knowledge proof technology with a sidechain infrastructure called Zendoo. The project launched in 2017 as ZenCash, a fork of ZClassic (itself a fork of Zcash), before rebranding to Horizen in 2018. The ZEN coin funds the network through a treasury model that allocates mining rewards to the main chain, node operators, and a community development fund.
Horizen 2.0, announced in 2023, repositioned the project as an EVM-compatible zero-knowledge network targeting enterprise and DeFi deployments. The upgrade aims to bring Horizen into the broader Ethereum ecosystem while preserving the privacy toolkit that differentiates it from general-purpose L1s.
ZEN/USD trades on Binance, Kraken, KuCoin, Gate.io, and several mid-tier exchanges. The price on this page refreshes every 60 seconds from aggregated order-book data.

Zendoo is the defining technical feature of Horizen. It lets developers deploy fully customizable blockchains as sidechains that communicate with the Horizen mainchain through cross-chain transfer protocols. Unlike most sidechain designs that rely on a trusted federation to relay proofs, Zendoo uses SNARK proofs to verify sidechain state transitions on the mainchain without requiring the mainchain to understand the sidechain rules.

Horizen 2.0 extends this model with EVM compatibility, enabling Solidity smart contracts to run on Horizen-connected sidechains and share liquidity with Ethereum-based protocols.
Privacy in Horizen derives from its Zcash lineage. The protocol supports both transparent addresses (t-addresses) and shielded addresses (z-addresses) using zk-SNARK proofs. Shielded transactions on Horizen conceal sender, receiver, and amount. As with Zcash, transparent transactions remain the more common on-chain path because shielded transactions are computationally heavier.
ZEN has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins, mirroring Bitcoin. Block rewards are split three ways: 60% to miners, 20% to Secure Node operators, and 20% to the Horizen treasury and Super Node operators. This distribution is unusual among PoW coins and was designed to sustain a large node network that enhances privacy by routing transactions through multiple hops.
Secure Nodes must stake a minimum of 42 ZEN and maintain uptime standards. Super Nodes require 500 ZEN and provide additional network infrastructure. The node network numbered over 30,000 nodes at its peak, one of the largest per-unit-of-market-cap node networks in crypto.
Horizen began as a Zcash fork and shares much of its privacy cryptography, but the two projects have diverged significantly. See the Zcash page for a full comparison. The headline differences:

Buying Horizen (ZEN) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in Horizen converter above to estimate exactly how much ZEN you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether Horizen is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, ZEN carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
