AltLayer is a decentralized protocol for restaked rollups — application-specific rollups that inherit security not only from their base layer (Ethereum, Solana, etc.) but also from EigenLayer restakers who opt in to validate the rollup’s active validation services (AVSs). The protocol was founded by Yaoqi Jia and launched its mainnet with an ALT airdrop in early 2024. AltLayer describes itself as rollup-as-a-service with an extra security layer.
ALT is the native governance and staking token. It is used to participate in the AltLayer DAO, restake for AVS security, and pay certain protocol fees. The project builds on top of EigenLayer’s restaking primitive on Ethereum. For context on the restaking ecosystem, see our Ethereum page.
ALT launched in January 2024 with significant initial volume driven by the airdrop and early restaking narrative. The token trades primarily against USDT and BTC on major centralized exchanges. Live data on this page refreshes every 60 seconds from a multi-venue weighted feed.
What moves ALT price:
For multi-year ALT scenarios, see our AltLayer price forecast.
AltLayer’s core design introduces three AVS components that any rollup can adopt independently or together: VITAL (decentralized verification), MACH (fast finality), and SQUAD (decentralized sequencing). Each AVS can be added to an existing rollup that uses any rollup stack — OP Stack, Arbitrum Orbit, ZK stacks — without switching the underlying technology.

The key proposition is that teams do not have to choose a single stack or rebuild from scratch. AltLayer acts as a security upgrade layer that can be added to any existing rollup with EigenLayer operator opt-in.
ALT has a capped supply with genesis allocation split across a community airdrop, ecosystem incentives, team, investors, and a protocol treasury. The airdrop at launch distributed tokens to EigenLayer restakers, rollup users across multiple chains, and early AltLayer testnet participants.
The supply is fully fixed at genesis. No new ALT can be minted beyond the initial allocation. Long-term value accrual depends on AVS fees and governance demand, not on token inflation.
AltLayer has integrated or partnered with major rollup stacks and infrastructure providers. The most notable integrations are with EigenLayer (foundational) and with rollup frameworks including Arbitrum Orbit, the OP Stack, and ZK rollup systems. Real-world deployments include gaming and consumer app rollups that use MACH for fast confirmation and SQUAD for censorship resistance.
As the EigenLayer ecosystem matures, AVS count and restaked ETH are the core growth metrics to watch. For comparison with another EigenLayer-native protocol, see our EigenLayer ecosystem overview.
ALT is listed on major exchanges and is one of the more accessible restaking tokens from the 2024 cohort:
Advanced users can also restake ALT via EigenLayer-connected interfaces to participate in AVS security operations, but this involves additional smart-contract and slashing risk.
ALT is an early-stage infrastructure token in the restaking category. The risks are substantial.

Buying AltLayer (ALT) is straightforward once you know which exchange to use and which trading pair offers the best liquidity. The steps below describe the typical flow used by most investors today.
You can also use the built-in AltLayer converter above to estimate exactly how much ALT you would receive for a given amount in USD before placing an order.
Whether AltLayer is a good investment depends on your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for volatility. Like all cryptocurrencies, ALT carries significant market risk — prices can rise or fall sharply in a single day, and past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns.
