Onyxcoin (XCN) is the governance token of Onyx Protocol, the rebrand of a project that started life in 2014 as Chain. The original company, Chain.com, was an enterprise blockchain firm founded by Adam Ludwin and backed by Visa, Citi, Nasdaq, and Capital One. It built private ledger infrastructure for banks and payment networks before pivoting away from that model. After acquiring the Sequence cloud-ledger product line and several restructurings, the project relaunched as a public, retail-facing DeFi and scaling platform, with XCN as its native token.
XCN is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum used for governance over Onyx Protocol parameters, staking, and fee discounts inside the network. The 2024 rebrand to Onyx Protocol repositioned the project as a Layer 3 / scaling solution focused on cheap settlement and on-chain finance, sitting on top of Ethereum and modern L2s. For the underlying chain, see our Ethereum page.
XCN trades on most major spot venues. The deepest pairs are XCN/USDT and XCN/USD. Live data on this page comes from a multi-venue feed and refreshes every 60 seconds. The reference quote is volume-weighted across the most liquid order books. XCN reached an all-time high in late 2021 during the broader altcoin cycle and has traded inside a wide range since, with most of the price action concentrated around major rebrand and listing milestones.

The history of XCN is unusual because the project has been through more reinventions than most. Chain Inc. was founded in 2014 as a Bitcoin developer platform, raised capital from Visa, Citi, Nasdaq, and Capital One, and pivoted to permissioned ledger software for banks. In 2018 the firm merged with Stellar-affiliated Lightyear and the Chain product line was largely shut down. The Sequence cloud-ledger product, originally built inside Chain, eventually became the home of the public token launch.

The takeaway: XCN is a token attached to a project with deep enterprise roots, repeated pivots, and a 10-year history of building infrastructure that did not always find a market. The Onyx Protocol chapter is the most ambitious attempt to give XCN a clear product story.
Onyx Protocol positions itself as a Layer 3 / scaling solution that settles to Ethereum-aligned L2s and offers a DeFi stack on top. The high-level design borrows from the modular thesis that has dominated the L2 conversation since 2023: separate execution, settlement, and data availability into distinct layers and let the application chain pick the trade-offs.
The technical bet is that DeFi-specific L3s can offer cheaper execution than general-purpose L2s while still inheriting Ethereum security. Whether that bet pays off depends on whether real liquidity migrates and whether the protocol can attract integrations from established DeFi blue chips.
XCN launched with a large total supply, a portion of which was distributed to legacy Chain Inc. backers and the community. The circulating supply has expanded steadily through scheduled unlocks. The token serves three primary functions inside Onyx Protocol.
XCN is a high-supply, low-unit-price token by design. That structure makes the token accessible at retail prices but also means market cap, not unit price, is the right metric to watch. For a contrast in tokenomics philosophy, see our Aave page which uses a small, capped supply.
XCN sits at an unusual intersection: a long enterprise lineage, a 2021 retail token launch, and a 2024 pivot to L3 and DeFi. The closest comparables depend on which angle matters most.
For traders, XCN is a small-cap DeFi/L3 position that tends to outperform in DeFi rallies and underperform in risk-off periods. For long-term holders, the question is whether Onyx Protocol delivers enough product traction to justify a re-rating versus the larger, more established L2 and DeFi peers.
XCN is listed on most tier-1 and tier-2 centralized exchanges and on Ethereum-based DEXs. A typical buy and stake flow looks like this:
If you plan to vote in Onyx governance, hold XCN in a wallet that supports delegation. XCN sitting on a centralized exchange does not vote on your behalf.
Holding XCN is a leveraged bet on the Onyx Protocol thesis: that a DeFi-focused L3 with a clear governance token can carve out share against established L2s and DeFi blue chips. The risks come in several shapes.
